Beautiful tote made from recycled operating theatre material.

Coming from Cuba, I grow up surrounded of reused, mended  and repurposed items. Sometimes your imagination will play you tricks as you think this material may work for that , and you may go all the way until the final results is a miss, but most of the time the results are awesome.

I remember in my secondary school years, we started a show during the compulsory 45 days of work in the orange plantations of Ceballos. I was performing as Farah Maria, one of the most talented and beautiful cuban singers of all times. I remember the song goes like …. «yo no me baño en el malecón «… por qué?.. porque en el agua hay un Tiburón … jajaja ( I don’t swim in the malecón (iconic cuban waterfront in Havana) why? Because there is a shark in the water.. so during the performance I danced and moved like Farah. Imitating her.

For one of my performance my aunt, a very good seamstress, make me this outfit, she repurpose a white old linen sheet and added red ribbon. The ruffles were in fashion at the time and also is a traditional cuban dress look. I remembered how short the skirt was in front, I was holding the back to cover myself , like in the picture, for the entire night. But I loved the hat, full of colourful tropical fruits and I also liked the assorted traditional neckless  also handcrafted by myself using seeds; The entire look make me feel cuban, like my idol at the time, the beautiful Farah. That was exactly in 1981.

But I just  went off topic..

Working in the operating theatres we see lot of waste every day. One of my colleagues, a recovery room nurse, rescued some blue paper sheets, the ones used to cover the sterile sets and surgeons gown , it is a sort of woven waterproof  paper. She cut it in strips, then she knitted the strips into a mat.

When I saw how beautiful is was coming out, I told her I can transform her new mat like piece into a tote bag.

She was delighted and proceeded more enthusiastically to achieve a larger piece.

So here is my version of the recycled theatre paper tote just in time for the hot African summer. It can be used as a beach or swimming pool tote or to carried your stuff to picnic with your partner or your best friend.

IMG_0723IMG_0727I just added a dark blue cotton lining, a front pocket that close with a magnetic snap for quick access to car keys and phone. For closure I use an oversized button and elastic band. The handles are webbing of matching colour and I added 4 silver bag feet. It was a quick sew that I completed in a free afternoon.

Anastasia. Tote Bag with laptop pocket Free!!!

Anastasia Tote bag is the first serious pattern with instructions that I’ve made. Oh boy, it’s a lot of work!

I designed this bag thinking on my own needs, a fashionable and strong bag with plenty pockets and compartments that allows me to be organised and carry all my stuff to work everyday. I’ve been using this bag for few months now and I just love it!

I shrug the file as much as I could without distortions on the pictures. I hope you enjoy making her as much as I did.

I’m  writing  Anastasia Tote Bag pattern in Spanish for my latino community, Im also busy with a tutorial about super useful projects you must have in your car; spoiler alert 📢 a tissue holder, fabric trash bin, sunglasses pouch and  first aid bag. I also jump on the train of making a new version of the Every Day Tote pattern , updated  by Bagstock Designs, this one is almost finish. I started a collection of travel bags for my incoming trip to Toledo next month, yes I’m going to Toledo, Spain , for a weeding and I’m so excited!!… and in between bag making projects I go to the hospital to  save lives 😉 , perhaps the other way around hahaha

Luna Easy Denim Shoulder Strap Bag

Hello there:

My friend’s daughter is 8 years old, her name is Luna and she loves sewing bags. Her mom is an excellent musician but can’t sew. So in her attempt to feed her little girl creativity she sent me a message asking for help. Here is Luna’s dilema:

Luna got hold of a worn pair of jeans and she wants to make a bag. She isn’t so confident with zipper placement yet, so she  prefer to avoid zipper closures. She also got tons of buttons  and a little sewing machine. She is been looking online for some tutorials but she got overwhelmed and couldn’t find the right one to tackle her project.

With all this info, I took the challenge and designed this quick bag for Luna to make,  and any little girl out there with the same problem.

First a word of caution about sewing on denim:

Start with a fresh needle. It must be Jeans needle, for lighter denim you can use 90/14 and 100/16 or 100/18 for heavy denim.

Always Use polyester thread for bag making. Cotton thread break easy and doesn’t last.

Always pay attention to grain lines when cutting. If you don’t, your project will appear twisting and unprofessional.

Denim can fray badly; always zig-zag those rough edges.

Use longer stitch length,  3mm is better than the usual 2,5mm.

Not all sewing machines «like» sewing on denim, especially on thicker seams. That’s why I change my mind and made the straps from cotton fabric.

WS: Means wrong side of the fabric/ RS means right side of the fabric

What do you need to start?

  • Old pair of Jeans
  • A fat quarter of pretty cotton
  • Strip of Bias binding  for piping and strap 60″X2″(20″X2 for pipping & 40″X 2″ for strap)
  • Strip of matching quilting cotton for strap 40″x2″
  • 5″ elastic band
  • 1 big button or a flower

 

From the Denim fabric cut:

  • 2 pieces of 8″X11″ for exterior panels
  • 2 pieces 8″ X 6″, one for flap lining and the other one for lining slip pocket
  • A nice pocket for back exterior panelIMG_1113

From the fat quarter cut:

  • 2 pieces for lining 8″X11″
  • 1 piece of pretty cotton for flap 8″X6″
  • 1 piece for slip pocket 8″X6″

Instructions:

  1. Round all corners. Take a spool of thread and used as guide to round all corners for exterior, lining and bottom of flap pieces. Trace around the spool and cut to round the corners.

2. Make your pipping. Introduce your corn on the fold of the bias binding and baste stitch in place using your zipper foot.

3. Take your flap top and sew the pipping all around. Remember to notch the corners of the pipping strip and slow down around the corners.

4. Pin the elastic band to the flap lining piece and sew in place making a loop . This will be your bag closure as you can loop the elastic around the big button or flower.

5. Pin the flap pieces RS together and sew all around. I like to use the piping stitch line as a guide. Turn it to the RS and press. Topstitch around the border.

6. Make the straps: With the RS together, Sew the 40″ long bias strip with your cotton strip along one long edge with ½’ seam allowance. Next turn the strip to the RS and fold and press the other long edge towards the middle ½». Edge stitch along the long sides.

7. Pin and baste the strap to the back exterior piece placing each short edge 1″ from the corner. Make sure the strap is straight.

8. Sew the pocket to the back exterior piece and hand- sew your button or flower to the front exterior pice as shown in the picture.

10. Pin and sew exterior pieces RS together.

11. Take the 2 slip pocket pieces and sew RS together along the upper edge. Turn around and press. Top stitch the top edge. Pin the pocket RS up to a lining piece RS up and sew all around in place.

12. Pin the 2 lining pieces RS together and sew together the sides and the bottom.

13. Finish all your seams now! Zig zag to avoid fray.

14. Take your exterior bag WS out, Tuck in the flap and the strap. Introduce the lining bag RS out inside your exterior bag and pin together , matching the side seams. Stitch all around leaving 3″ opening for turning.

15. Pull the bag out through the opening and press in place. Close the opening and topstitch all around.

Voila 😬 you are done!!

Easy DIY Vintage Small Purse Pattern and Instructions

Hi, Today I bring you a super easy project that you can complete in a couple of hours. All you need is a 6 «X 2» metal frame that you can find in any local craft store and some fabric scraps, left over from another project. You can choose to made it totally vintage, by adding lace decorations , you can also feature your favorite embroidery design or just your favourite novelty fabric.

For my project I used Alexander Henry «Las elegantes». In South Africa you can get clasp frames like this online quiltersbasket.co.za 

Just a warning, making clasp purses can become highly addictive, trust me..

Materials

1 fat quarter of quilting cotton for feature exterior fabric

1 Fat quarter for lining fabric

1/2m medium weight woven interfacing

20” X 7” fusible fleece (medium-loft)

Matching polyester thread

Instructions:

  1. Download the pattern here Coin Purse 6X2
  2. Print the pattern in Adobe Acrobat Reader . Do not scale, must be at 100%.
  3. Before cutting measure the test square, must be 1″ X 1″.
  4. Using the pattern as template cut 2 Exterior fabric, cut 2 lining fabric.
  5. Cut the pattern at the dashed line. Then cut 4 interfacing and 2 fusible fleece. This will avoid bulk seams.

6. Fuse the iron-on interfacing to the wrong side of the 2 exterior and lining pieces. Fuse the fleece to the exterior pieces. Transfer the small lines on the sides from the pattern to each piece. This lines mark the bottom of hinge.

7. Bring the 2 outer pieces wrong sides together and pin.

IMG_10918. Sew the sides of the exterior and also the lining pieces starting at the small marks. Sew the bottom sides of the exterior pieces together. Repeat on the lining pieces as well but leave 3″ opening for turning at the end.

 

 

 

 

 

9. Open the seams and press it flat.

10. Now pinch the corners, matching the bottom and side seams carefully and sew boxing the corners.

 

 

 

 

11. Repeat the «Boxing the corners» step on the purse lining also.

12. Turn the exterior purse wrong side out and introduce the lining purse right side out inside as shown on the picture below. Pin at the top edge. side seams must meet together.

13. Edge stitch all around the top.

14. Turn the purse right side out through the opening you left on the lining. Give it a good press.

15. Close shut the opening at the bottom of the lining piece and top stitch all around the top .

16. Make a mark on the top center of your frame with a piece of tape. mark also the middle of both sides of purse top edge. Introduce the borders on the frame and start hand- stitching the purse to the frame from the middle towards the sides borders.

Report on progress on Anastasia’s pattern and our Visit to KNP/ Progresando con el patrón de Anastasia y nuestro viaje al Kruger National Park.

Hola amigos, he tenido unas semanas de mucho trajín pero a la vez productivas y de aventuras.

A pesar del trabajo en el hospital , las obligaciones con la universidad y mi vida social y familiar, he logrado algunos avances en mi proyecto Anastasia, que como les prometí voy a compartir con ustedes y será completamente gratuito. El asunto diseño de bolsas es un poco mas complicado que lo que pueden imaginar. Lleva una serie de pasos que son fundamentales para lograr un producto de calidad, si vaya una bolsa WOW!, Que guay!, Donde la compraste?!, Me encanta tu cartera!, etc, me entienden verdad. Además de probar el patron alrededor de 5 veces hasta que estes contenta, he tenido que documentar las instrucciones paso a paso, y que conste después de tantos años convoyando los 2 idiomas en mi vida diaria, pues no es nada fácil expresar mis ideas en un idioma sin que se «cuelen» palabras del otro en la conversación , lo cual hace todo el proceso un poco lento. Después está lo del «Adobe illustrator» , vaya programa complicado! Aunque gracias a mi talentosa hija Gabrielle , creo que ya le » coji el tumbao».

Y voy a publicarlo para ustedes el dia 25 de julio, que cumple años mi mamá.

Como parte del proceso de test, le hice esta version de Anastasia a una gran amiga , Usando Tela de algodón de Tula Pink, piel y todo el metal de Emmaline bags. El  colgante lo encontré en una tienda de Quincalla local y para el interior use unos fat quarters* de polka dots**. Juzguen ustedes mismas por la foto. fue difícil dejarla marchar a su nueva buena , aunque les digo que la alegra de mi amiga con el regalo me dió más satisfacción.

Hi guys, the past few weeks since my last entry have been very busy at work but at the same time productive and adventurous.

Then there’s the «Adobe Illustrator», what a complicated program. Although thanks to the help of my beautiful daughter Gabrielle,that patiently is teaching me the program, I think I’m on the right track.

I’m going to publish the final pattern with instructions for you on July 25, which is my mom’s birthday.

As part of the testing process, I made this version of Anastasia to a great friend, using Tula Pink cotton fabric, leather and all the metal of Emmaline bags. I found the pendant in a local store and for the lining I used fat quarters  from polka dots. Judge yourselves by the photo. It was difficult to let her go to her new master, although I tell you, the joy of my friend with the gift gave me far more satisfaction.

Aunque mi visita al norte fue un viaje de trabajo, aprovechamos que ya estábamos en los alrededores y visitamos el parque nacional de Kruger. Pensé que seria una buena oportunidad para tratar mi cámara nueva. Una canon «pequeña», regalo de mi media naranja. Mi esposo, es cirujano general y  cirujano de trauma  pero además es un gran aficionado a la fotografía de la fauna africana. Como el viaje era tan breve, acordamos concentrarnos en buscar aves, si por casualidad veíamos un depredador pues mejor pero la idea era buscar aves. les confieso nunca había disfrutado tanto un safari como esta vez, las tomas fotográficas con mi pequeña cámara quedaron espectaculares!

( no te te olvide que en asunto fotografía no soy muy ducha)

aquí les dejo algunas fotos de nuestra aventura mas reciente por la selva africana con alguna info que al menos yo encuentro fascinante.

Esta es una «Black- Chested snake eagle», en español se traduce como águila de pecho negro cazadora de serpientes. Es un ave majestuosa , la mas grande después del Aguila marcial. Puede virar la cabeza en un ángulo de 270 grados. Se imaginan? . Estaba posada en un árbol muy alto y bastante lejos de nuestro auto, casi a 100m de distancia. La foto la tomó Monzón con su super-lente, pero yo la estuve mirando con mis anteojos un buen rato..

Although my visit to the north was a work trip, we took advantage of the fact that we were already in the surroundings and visited the Kruger National Park. I thought it would be a good opportunity to try my new camera. A «small» canon, a gift from my soulmate. My husband is a general and trauma surgeon but he is also a big fan of African wildlife photography. I confess I had never enjoyed a safari so much as this time, the photographic shots with my little camera were spectacular!

Lets not forget that my photography skills are at newbie level at best.

This are some photos of our most recent adventure in the African jungle with some info that I find fascinating.

This is a «Black-Chested snake eagle». It is a majestic bird, the largest of its kind after the Martial Eagle. It can turn the head at an angle of 270 degrees while searching for prey. It was perched in a very tall tree and quite far from our car, almost 100m away. The picture was taken by my hubby with his super-lens, but I was watching her with my binoculars for a while.

Esta foto del águila pescadora la tomé yo con mi canon, estaba a unos 20m de distancia mirando al rio Olifants. Estas águilas se ven con bastante frecuencia en la cercanía de los ríos. Se dice que su canto es el Canto de Africa. Tuvimos tanta suerte que vimos otra aterrizando con un pez en las garras muy cerca de nosotros, aquí les dejo las fotos.

On my quest for the perfect bag design I create «Anastasia». First I’ll tell you How I came up with the name. Few weeks ago as I was coming out of work, on arrival to my car there was this security guy that greet me happily with a big smile and said – Good evening «Dr Anastasia»-, I looked at him confused and answered  -Good Evening but my name is not Anastasia- then he looked at the sign on my parking place «Doctor on call Anaesthesia » and point to the sign intrigued.

What can I said…. So Anastasia it is, the almost perfect tote for female anaesthetist or any profesional women that need to take her laptop at work daily.

En mi búsqueda del diseño perfecto del bolso, he creado «Anastasia». Primero te diré cómo se me ocurrió el nombre. Hace algunas semanas, cuando salía del trabajo, al llegar a mi auto, apareció este tipo de seguridad que me saludó felizmente con una gran sonrisa y dijo: «Buenas tardes», Dra. Anastasia «, lo miré confundida y repetí:» Buenas tardes, pero mi nombre no es Anastasia, luego miró el cartel en mi lugar de estacionamiento «Doctor de guardia Anesthesia» y señaló el cartel intrigado.

The exterior is just a pretty tote. But inside you can safely keep your laptop with reinforced and cushioned built-in zipper pocket. Another zipper pocket on the lining for your wallet, keys, etc and a slip pocket big enough to fit your stethoscope, pen and syringe marker. There is also plenty room for documents, chargers, etc.

The final measurements is 17″ wide, 11,5″ high and 4,5″ deep (43cmX29cmX11.4cm)

El exterior es solo un bolso bonito. Pero dentro puede guardar de manera segura su computadora portátil con un bolsillo reforzado y acolchado con zipper. Otro bolsillo con zipper en el forro para su billetera, llaves, etc. y un bolsillo deslizante lo suficientemente grande como para guardar su estetoscopio, lapicero y marcador de jeringa. También hay mucho espacio para documentos, cargadores, etc.

The one on the picture was intended to be «the ugly», you know the first one a bag designer make to test measurements, fitting, to see what is wrong and improve the design. Well on this first attempt designers usually use cheap fabric. I used local fabric from my favourite SA online shop habby and lace. the pink accent is advertise on their website as leatherette bean bag and its really cheap. It turn out to be awesome 🤩

I’m still improving the design, I’m thinking adding an exterior pocket at the back for quick access to the cellphone and car keys.

The process is still on baby steps as I need to computerise the pattern and write the instructions but Im really serious about this project and Ill definitely shared with you as a free pattern. For now you can leave a comment and give me your opinion.

El que está en la imagen fue diseñado para ser «el feo», usted conoce el primero que un diseñador de bolsos hace para probar medidas, ajuste, para ver qué está mal y mejorar el diseño. Bueno, en este primer intento, los diseñadores suelen usar tela barata. Utilicé tela local de mi tienda de SA favorita, habby y lace. el acento rosado se anuncia en su sitio web como «leatherette bean bag» y es realmente barato. El resultado fue fantástico 🤩

Gabrielle Cosmetic Pouch Free Pattern Spanish and English Instructions

Feliz dia de las madres!!

Hoy les traigo mi primer Patrón «Hágalo usted mismo» y mejor aún se los doy completamente gratuito con instrucciones con foto paso a paso.

Este estuche tan fácil de hacer y además útil será el regalo perfecto para todas las madres y también todas las jovencitas , que como mi hija Gabrielle les encanta su maquillaje. Es pequeño , por lo que lo puedes llevar cuando vayas de viaje, incluso en un pequeño maletín de fin de semana.

Mide 22cm de ancho X 15cm de altura y 5cm de fondo (aproximadamente 22″X 6″ X 2″)

Antes de imprimir el patrón asegúrate de seleccionar 100% o medida original en la ventana de dialogo de tu impresora. El cuadro de control que está en la última pagina tiene que medir 1” o 2,5 cm.

Todas las costuras son ¼”, con excepción de las costuras de afuera que son de ½”.

Materiales

  • ¼ m de tela estampada de algodón
  • 1/4m de tela de contraste de algodón, gamuza 
  • ¼ de guata o esponja
  • 1 zipper de 7,5”de largo
  • 3 Broches Magnéticos o de chaqueta
  • Hilo a tono 

Instrucciones

Una vez que hayas impreso el patron y te hayas cerciorado que el cuadrito de control mide 2,5 cm, abre los agujeros que marcan la posición de los broches señalados con pequeños círculos. Este paso te permitirá transferir a la tela la posición exacta de los broches.

  1. Corta la tela, entretela y guata de acuerdo a las instrucciones escritas en cada plantilla.
  2. Corta ½ ” por los bordes de las piezas de guata. para evitar bultos en la linea de costura
  3. Corta 2 cuadritos de la tela de exterior que midan 2″X 2″ para el cierre del zipper.
  4. Pega la entretela y luego la guata a su pieza correspondiente, ya sea con el calor de la plancha o con una costura zig-zag por los bordes.
  5. Antes de comenzar debes tener las siguientes piezas

Estuche de Cosméticos (B)

2 X tela estampada de exterior

2 X tela interior

4 X entretela (omitir si usa tela de mezclilla o lona)

2 X guata o esponja

Today I bring you my first DIY Pattern and even better it is  free including step by step instructions with pics.

This pouch, so easy to make and also useful, will be the perfect gift for all mothers and young girls alike, who, like my daughter Gabrielle love her makeup. It’s small bag, so you can take it on a trip, even in a small weekender bag.

It measures 22cm wide X 15cm high and 5cm deep (approximately 22 «X 6» X 2 «)

Read  all the instructions carefully. First download your free pattern on the link Gabrielle above in the Spanish version.

Before printing the pattern make sure to select 100% or original measurement in the dialog window of your printer. The control box on the last page has to measure 1 «or 2.5 cm.

All seams are ¼ «, with the exception of outside seams that are ½».

Materials

¼ m of cotton printed fabric
1 / 4m cotton contrasting fabric
¼ of batting, fleece or foam

½ m medium weigh interfacing
1 zipper 7.5 «long
3 Magnetic snaps 
Thread to match

Instructions

Once you have printed the pattern and you have ascertained that the control box measures 2.5 cm, open the holes that mark the position of the snaps marked with small circles. This step will allow you to transfer the exact position of the snaps to the fabric.

Cut the fabric, interfacing and fleece according to the instructions written on each pattern piece.
Cut ½ «by the edges of the pieces of fleece to avoid bulges on the seam line.
Cut 2 squares of the outside fabric that measure 2 «X 2» for zipper taps.
Attach the interfacing and the fleece to its corresponding piece, either with the heat of the iron or with a zig-zag seam around the edges.
Before starting you must have the following pieces

Cosmetics Case (B)

2 X exterior  fabric

2 X interior fabric

4 X interfacing (omit if you use denim or canvas)

2 X iron on  fleece or fusible foam

Estuche de Pinceles (A)

1x tela de  exterior

1 X tela de interior (tela de contraste)

Bolsillo de Estuche de pinceles (C)

2 X piezas de bolsillo + 2 entretela

Marca la posición del broche en la pieza interior (el círculo más cerca del borde redondo, que corresponde a la solapa. (macho)

Marca la posición de los otros 3 broches en la cara exterior. (hembra en el borde y macho en los 2 de arriba que pegan al estuche principal)

Marca la posición de los 2 broches (hembra) en la pieza posterior del estuche principal.

Coloca los broches magnéticos según las instrucciones del vendedor o también puedes mirarlo en este video Magnetic snaps

Recuerda reforzar con un cuadro de guata en la parte posterior

Brush Case (A) : 1x exterior fabric, 1 X interior fabric (contrast fabric)

Brush case pocket (C): 2 X pocket pieces + 2 interfacing

Mark the position of the snaps on the lining piece (the circle closest to the round edge, which corresponds to the flap. (Male)

Mark the the other 3 snaps position on the exterior piece. (female on the edge and male on the top 2 that snaps to the main case)

Mark the position of the 2 snaps (female) on the back part of the main case.

Place the magnetic snaps according to the seller’s instructions or you can also watch it in this video Magnetic snaps (link above on the Spanish version) 
Remember to reinforce with a scrap of foam or batting on the back of each snap.

Estuche de pinceles

Corta el cuadro del bolsillo de la plantilla y marca la posición en la pieza interior.

Coloca las 2 piezas del bolsillo CD juntas y unélas con alfileres, Cose los bordes superior y derecho. Corta las puntas y viral al derecho. Planchado en posición y cose el bolsillo por los 4 bordes. Marca con un lápiz de costura o una tisa las rayas de acuerdo al patron. Si lo prefieres haz tus propias rayas de division de acuerdo al grosor de tus lápices de ceja o pinceles de sombra.

Brush case

Cut out the box from the template pocket and mark the position on the inside piece. Place the 2 pieces of the pocket RS together and join them with pins, Sew the upper and right edges. Cut the tips and turn it. Ironed in position and sew the pocket 4 edges. Mark the division lines according to the pattern. If you prefer, make your own division lines according to the thickness of your eyebrow pencils or shadow brushes.

Coloca el bolsillo e la posición marcada en la pieza interior y cose las rayas de división. Primero cose el bolsillo a la pieza interior por los lados y el fondo. Cose por encima de las rayas marcadas. Refuerza las costura con puntada de retroceso en las esquinas. Recorta el exceso de la tela del bolsillo alineando ambos bordes. Reduce la velocidad de costura en las esquinas. 

Place the pocket in the marked position on the inside piece. Sew the sides and the bottom and then sew the division lines.    Reinforces the stitching with backward stitch at the corners. Trim the excess fabric from the pocket by aligning both edges. Reduces the sewing speed at the corners.

Coloca las piezas de exterior y la interior CD juntas y cose por todo el borde dejando 3” sin coser en el lado opuesto al bolsillo. Corta por todo el borde, preferentemente con unas tijeras de esquila o también puedes cortar pequeños triángulos en los bordes, con mucho cuidado de no cortar la costura.

Viralo al derecho alando con mucho cuidado por el lado que dejaste abierto. Plancha en posición y cose por todo el borde. El estuche de pinceles esta terminado. Ponlo a un lado.

Place the exterior and interior pieces RS together and sew all over the edge leaving 3 » opening on the opposite side of the pocket. Cut around the edge, preferably with shearing scissors or you can also cut small triangles, being careful not to cut the seam.

carefully turn it around pulling from the hole that  you left open. Press in position and sew around the edge. The Brushes case is finished. Put it aside

Une los bordes rectos de las pinzas del borde inferior de las 4 piezas CDJ y cose en linea recta.  To close the darts: clips the straight bottom edges of the 4  pieces and sew each on a straight line.

 Cierre de zipper/ Zipper Closure

Prepara el cierre de zipper: Corta el zipper a medida 7,5″/ Cut the zipper 7,5″

  • Toma los 2 cuadros de 2″x 2″  que cortaste en el paso No 3 para el cierre del zipper y dobla cada uno por la mitad cara derecha juntas (CDJ) ,  Plancha para crear un pliegue. Abra el cuadro y dobla en ambas mitades hacia el pliegue central cara reversa juntas (CRJ). Plancha nuevamente. Coloca cada uno en los extremos de zipper como en la fotografía de arriba y cose a una distancia de ⅜» encerrando el zipper en cada extremo. puedes repetir otra linea de costura en el borde o cierra los 4 extremos si lo prefieres. Corta la tela sobrante a cada lado del zipper.
  • Take the 2 2 «x 2″ squares that you cut in step 3 for the zipper closure and fold each in the right side half together (RST), Press to create a fold. Open it  and fold in both halves towards the center fold (WST). Press again. Place each one on the zipper ends as in the photograph above and sew at a distance of ⅜ » enclosing the zipper at each end. Repeat another seam line at the edge or close the 4 ends if you prefer. Cut off the leftover fabric on each side of the zipper.

Marca la mitad de las 4 piezas y también la mitad del zipper.  Une el zipper (con alfileres o presillas)  a la pieza exterior de alante ( la que no tiene broches) CDJ fijáte que las 2 mitades marcadas coincidan y embasta en esta posición. Coloca la pieza de forro (interior) CRA encima del zipper, de manera tal que el zipper quede sandwich entre las 2 piezas de tela. Cose en posición.

Mark the half of the 4 pieces and also the half of the zipper. Clip the zipper to the exterior piece of the front (the one with no snaps) RST ,  the 2 halves marked coincide, sew in this position. Place the piece of lining (interior) CRA on top of the zipper, so that the zipper is sandwiched between the 2 pieces of fabric. Sew in position.

Viralo al derecho y repite el mismo procedimiento en el otro lado del zipper.

Turn to the right side and repeat same steps on the other side.

Plancha cerca del zipper con mucho cuidado de no tocar con el calor de la plancha el plástico. Pasa una costura de afuera en cada borde superior.

Press near the zipper, being very careful not to touch the plastic zipper. Top stich on both sides.

Abre el zipper. Une las 2 piezas de exterior y las 2 piezas interiores de forro CDJ a cada lado del zipper , Unelos en esta posición con alfileres o presillas y cose por todo el borde dejando 3″ en el borde entre las pinzas del forro. Cose una costura de zig-zag por todo el borde para evitar deshilado.

Open the zipper. Pin the 2 exterior pieces and the 2 lining pieces RST on each side of the zipper, pin or clip them in this position and sew all over the edge leaving 3 «on the edge between the lining darts. Zig-zag around the edge to prevent fraying.

Viralo al derecho . Cierra la apertura del fondo del forro. y ya está!

Turn it to the right side pulling carefully from the opening. Close the opening on the lining bottom and voilà!

Bolsa de señora / Drawstring Bag

Hoy he terminado esta moderna bolsa de señora en piel artificial . El patrón original recomienda tela de algodón pero se me ocurrió que con un poco de imaginación podría hacer un bolso de estilo clásico pero un toque moderno y caro. El bolsillo exterior con cierre de zipper es un detalle necesario para acceso rápido al móvil, la billetera o las llaves. A quién no le ha pasado que suena el móvil dentro del bolso y pierdes la llamada porque no lo llegas a encontrar a tiempo?. Bueno pues con este simple detalle ya está resulto el problema. También le he agregado un prendedor dorado al deslizador del cordón de cierre, que además de darle un detalle muy femenino le proporciona mas estabilidad.

Este tipo de bolsos se puede completar en una tarde de domingo. Eso si necesitaras las herramientas necesarias para los ojetes y los remaches. Pero no te agobies es bien fácil y te lo puedo explicar paso a paso en próximos tutorials.

He estado pensando en un próximo proyecto fácil para mis amigas principiantes , que les parece el estuche de los cosméticos ?

Today I finished this modern drawstring bag in artificial leather. The original pattern recommended cotton fabric but it occurred to me that with a little imagination I could make a classic style bag but a modern and expensive touch. The outer pocket with zipper closure is a necessary detail for quick access to the cellphone, wallet or car keys. Who has not missed a phone call while digging on your bag ? Well, with this simple detail, this is not a problem anymore. I have also added a golden pin to the slider, which in addition to adding a very feminine detail provides more stability to it.

This type of bag can be done on a Sunday afternoon. However you will need the necessary tools for eyelets and rivets insertion. But do not get overwhelmed it is very easy and I can show it to you in a step by step tutorial.

Bolsillos interiores y cremallera de cierre. Lining pockets and zipper closure

Hola amigos, hoy les traigo un nuevo tutorial y otros cambios. Esta vez voy a escribir también en inglés.

Hi there, today I bring you a new tutorial and some news. The last few days I’ve  been thinking that it’s not fair to excluded the people who have supported me so much in this project, from reading and following my blog. That is why I have decided , even if I have to invest a little more of my free time, to write in both languages.

Esta versión de Bolsa se diferencia en la anterior en los bolsillos interiores. Tiene un bolsillo pequeño de cierre de cremallera a un lado para el menudo o las llaves y un bolsillo deslizable en el lado opuesto.

This bag is a different version from the one before. Featuring a main zipper closure and 2 interior pockets: a small zipper pocket  for coins or keys and a slip pocket.

Materiales para los bolsillos/ Pockets Materials

Bolsillos de Cremallera: Corta 2 piezas de 7″ X 5″ de tela de algodón  + 2 piezas de entretela de la misma medida. / Zipper pocket: (2)  7″X 5″ quilting cotton + 2 interfacing.

Bolsillo Deslizable : Corta 2 piezas de 9″X 8″  + 2 piezas de entretela a la misma medida/ Slip pocket (2) X 9″X 8″ each  quilting cotton + 2 interfacing same measurements.

Cremallera No 5 de 21″ para el cierre principal (mas largo si los dientes son de plastico) / 21″ Zipper No 5 or bigger for main closure .

Cremallera No 3 de 8″ para bolsillo interior/ 8″ zipper for lining pocket.

Para el cierre de cremallera corta 2 piezas de exterior , 2 piezas de forro , 4 piezas de entretela de 18″X2″/ For the zipper closure, cut 2 pieces of exterior, 2 pieces of lining, 4 pieces of interlining of 18″ X 2″ .

Para la punta libre de la cremallera corta una pieza de tela exterior 3″ x 4″ / For zipper tap cut 1 piece of exterior fabric 3″ X 4″

Primero plancha cada pieza de tela de algodón a la entretela. First you must press together each piece of cotton fabric to it’s matching interface piece. 

Bolsillo Deslizable/ Slip Pocket

  • Coloca una pieza del bolsillo encima de la otra CD juntas. Júntalas con alfileres y cose por los bordes, dejando una apertura de 3″ en el borde inferior. Corta las 4 puntas y viralo al derecho. Plancha el bolsillo bien plano y pasa una costura de arriba en el borde superior. / Place one pocket piece on top of each other right sides (RS)  together. Pin them together leaving a 3 «opening at the bottom edge, clip the corners and turn to the right side, press, and top stitch the top edge.
  • Plancha una pieza del forro a la mitad formando un pliegue longitudinal para marcar el centro. haz lo mismo con el bolsillos recién terminado. Mide 4″ hacia abajo por la linea media marcada en el forro y marca un punto. Fija con alfileres el bolsillo haciendo corresponder la mitad superior del bolsillo con dicho punto. Cose ambas piezas juntas por los bordes laterales e inferior. Pon la pieza terminada a un lado.
  • Press a lining piece in half forming a longitudinal fold to mark the center. Do the same with the pocket you just finished. Measure 4 «down the middle line marked on the lining and mark, pin the pocket matching the middle fold with that point, as seen in the photo above, sew both pieces together at the sides and bottom edges. Put the  finished piece on the side for now.

Bolsillo de Cremallera/ Zipper Pocket

  • Plancha a la mitad la otra pieza del forro y una pieza del bolsillo de cremallera formando un pliegue longitudinal para marcar el centro. Coloca la pieza del forro encima de la mesa CD arriba. Mide 3″ por la linea media hacia abajo y marca este punto. Coloca una pieza del bolsillo, CR arriba haciendo coincidir el punto marcado con el centro del bolsillo. Une ambas piezas con alfileres. Mide 1″ hacia abajo por la linea media del bolsillo marca un punto. Traza una linea de 6″ a partir del punto medio. Marcando 3″ a cada lado. Traza ½» hacia abajo y cierra la figura formando un rectángulo como en la foto. A continuación pasa una costura de 2.5 mm por las lineas largas y de 1,5mm por las lineas cortas del rectángulo. Traza una linea en el medio del rectángulo y mide ½» por cada lado de esta linea formando un triangulo hacia cada lado/ Corta la linea media y las lineas de los triángulos con mucho cuidado de no cortar las costuras. Doblalas hacia dentro virando la cara de bolsillo hacia el otro lado. Plancha en su lugar. Coloca la cremallera de 8″ con la CD arriba en la apertura recién abierta y embastado con puntadas de a mano, alfileres o tape. Con el pie de cremallera en la maquina cosedlo por todo el borde.
  • Coloca la otra pieza del bolsillo en la parte de atrás y cose los 4 bordes CD juntas.
  • Press the center of the other lining piece and also one of the zip pocket pieces forming a longitudinal fold. Place the piece of lining on the table, RS up. Measure 3 «down the middle line and mark this point. Place one piece of zipper pocket WS up above the marked point matching with the center of the pocket, pin them together. On the pocket piece measure 1″ down the middle line and mark. Draw a 6 «line from the midpoint, starting on the middle and extending  3» on each side. Trace ½ «down and close the figure forming a rectangle as shown on the photo, then sew a 2.5 mm seam along the long lines and 1.5 mm along the short lines of the rectangle.  Draw a line in the middle of the rectangle and measure ½ «on each side of the middle  line forming 2 small triangles towards each side / Cut open the middle line and the lines of the triangles with great care not to cut the seams. Fold them in by turning the pocket face to the other side. Press in place. Position the 8 «zipper RS up in the newly opening and basted with hand stitches, pins or tape. With the zipper foot on the machine sew it all over the edge.
    Place the other piece of the pocket on the back and sew all edges together.

    Cierre de Cremallera/ Main zipper closure

  • Preparando la cremallera: dobla las puntas hacia delante y luego hacia atrás como en la foto. Cose una línea por los bordes para fijarlo en dicha posición.
  • Prepara la pieza del cierre doblando primero los bordes cortos hacia adentro ½ “ a cada lado. A continuación dobla hacia adentro los bordes largos hasta que ambos se toquen en la línea media. Dobla la pieza otra vez juntando los bordes cortos hasta formar un cuadrito.
  • Preparing the zipper: fold the tips of the zipper forward and then backwards as seen in the photo below. Sew a line along the edges to fix it in that position.
  • Zipper tap : Fold the short edges inwards ½ «on each side. Next, fold the long edges in until they touch the midline. Fold the piece again by joining the short edges to form a small square.

  • Dobla las 4 piezas del cierre de cremallera a la mitad y marca el centro de cada una con un marcador de tela. Dobla la cremallera y marca el centro.

  • Fold the 4 strips of fabric you cut for the zipper in half and mark the center of each . Fold the zipper as well and mark the center.
  • Coloca una de las piezas de forro en la mesa CD arriba. Comenzando por el centro marcado, fija la cremallera a dicha pieza con el lado derecho hacia arriba; embasta todo el borde con el pie del zipper dejando ½ » libre a cada lado.
  • Place one of the lining pieces on the table RS up. Starting at the marked center, pin the zipper to it, also RS up; Sew the entire edge with the zipper foot leaving ½ » free on each side.
  • Ahora coloca la pieza de exterior encima CR arriba y cose en esta posición; cerrando además con la costura el borde de la izquierda; el zipper quedará sándwich en el medio entre las 2 cintas.
  • Now place the exterior piece on top WS up and sew in this position; also closing with the seam the edge of the short end ; the zipper will be sandwich in the middle between the 2 strips.
  • Corta la puntica y viralo al derecho; plánchalo en posición con mucho cuidado evitando alcanzar con el calor el plástico del zipper. Repite lo mismo con las otras 2 cintas para completar la cremallera.
  • Trim the corner and turn it to the right side; Iron in position avoiding reaching the zipper plastic with heat. Repeat the same with the other 2 strips to complete the zipper.

Coloca la pieza terminada de forro en la mesa y fíjalo con presillas o alfileres a la pieza de cremallera CD arriba. Cose el borde.  Coloca la otra pieza CD arriba y cosedlo a la cremallera de la misma forma.

Place the finished piece of lining on the table and pin or clip it to the zipper piece WS up. Sew the edge. Place the other piece RS up and sew it to the zipper in the same way.

Dejando la cremallera hacia adentro y con cuidado de no coser el cierre del zipper. Une con alfileres las 2 piezas de forro CD juntas y coselos lados y el fondo ( recuerda dejar una apertura de 4″ que te servirá para virar al derecho mas tarde) . Cose todos bordes con puntada zig-zag . Une con alfileres las esquinas del fondo para cerrar la bolsa en forma de caja, como en la foto.

Leaving the zipper inwards and being careful not to sew the zipper closure. Pin the 2 pieces of  lining RS together and sew both sides and bottom (remember to leave an opening of 4 » that will serve to turn.  Sew all edges with zig-zag stitch. Pin the corners of the bottom with to close the bag in the shape of a box, sew in place as in the photo.

 

Vira el bolso exterior con la CR afuera e introduce el forro dentro de manera que ambas CD esten juntas y la cremallera quede sandwish entre el exterior y el forro. Coloca presillas o alfileres por todo el borde. Comenzando por las costuras laterales. Cose el borde. Vira La Bolsa al derecho halando con cuidado por la apertura abierta en el fondo del forro. Plánchalo en posición y cosedlo de nuevo por fuera . Cierra la apertura del forro. y ya está tu nueva bolsa con cierre de cremallera.

Turn the bag  exterior WS out and place the lining  inside so that both right sides  are together and the zipper is sandwish between the exterior and the lining. Place clips or pins all over the edge. Starting with the side seams. Sew the edge. Turn the Bag to the right by pulling carefully through the open opening at the bottom of the lining. Iron in position and top stitch the border. Cose shut the opening at lining bottom and there you are done!
